Blessing of Animals
at OLD TRINITY CHURCH
Individual animals are blessed in the parking lot of Old Trinity Church
annually from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saint Francis' Day, October 4.
Birdwatching at Old Trinity
Old Trinity’s Graveyard is protected by 89 acres of glebe (church lands) between Route 16 and
Church Creek. It contains some marsh, farmland, and undisturbed upland habitat as well as
ancient trees around the church and rectory. A project to protect the cemetery shoreline by the
reestablishment of a planted buffer is now underway and construction can be observed from the
parking lot.
This diverse habitat, upon which no hunting is allowed, provides cover for many native spices.
Some of the birds spotted this past year include: Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Great Egret,
American Eagle, Red Shouldered Hawk, Screech Owl, Great Horned Owl, Red Bellied
Woodpecker, Indigo Bunting, Orchard Oriole. Also seen, of course, are Robins, Cardinals, Blue
Jays, Mockingbirds, Thrashers, Kingbirds, various Gulls, Flickers, Hummingbirds, Sparrows,
Vireos, Bluebirds, Mallards, Wood Ducks, Snow Geese, Quail, Cowbirds, Grackles, Crows,
Blackbirds, Starlings, Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures.
The cuckoo has been heard but not seen.
